Understanding anamorphic DVD's

Anamorphic wide screen DVD movies contain about 33% more resolution than other wide screen DVD's.

Here's how: Most wide screen movies have an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 and a wide screen (16X9) TVs still does not cover the entire wide screen image as it was intended when originally filmed.

To make up for this loss the DVD player is cutting 135 lines by letter boxing the image and the result are the black lines on top and bottom of the screen.

The vertical resolution of a DVD is 480 lines and in this case you are only seeing 345 lines of resolution.

A wide screen TV can magnify or zoom the letter boxed image to fill the screen, but this will magnify the gaps between the lines and the resolution will still be 345 lines.

An anamorfic DVD uses 462 lines and for the same original movie aspect of 1.85:1 only 18 lines are lost as black bars on top and bottom.

If you set the display of a 16X9 TV to 4X3 the result will be an image stretched vertically, but if you set the display to 16X9 and the DVD player is set for a 16X9 display, the image stretches horizontally to its correct aspect ratio.

Most anamorphic DVD's are labeled "Enhanced for Wide screen TVs" or "Anamorphic Wide screen".
